Opinion Pieces: Stacey Dooley uses her privilege for good.

For as long as I can remember, Stacey Dooley has been one of my favourite documentary presenters. Her work has inspired me to see the world from different angles, consider my privilege and try to use my privilege to speak for those who can’t.

The documentaries made by Stacey bring to light subjects that we are afraid to even consider. Things we never even knew happened are brought on to our screens.

Her latest documentary, Stacey Dooley Investigates: Mums Selling Their Kids For Sex, left me speechless. Admittedly, I had never known that such horrific things happen and it was a harrowing watch, but it was something that needed to be told. The stories of those people had to be spoken to the world. The atrocities committed in the world had to be unveiled.

Stacey, herself, is a down to earth woman who’s documentaries appeal to many different people. I first found myself watching them due to the fact they were interesting and intriguing. The editing of them and the way they were told made it interesting for a teenage girl.

Now I’m older, I find the character of Stacey even more inspiring. As a privileged woman, Stacey is using her privilege to tell the story of others around the world. She knows she is privileged and doesn’t try to appear that she understands the horror the people she visits have been through. Stacey cannot understand what they are dealing with, and this means her documentaries give breathing space for the viewer. The viewer can make up their own opinion on what they think of what they are being shown.

Her recent documentary Stacey Dooley on The Frontline: Gun Girls and ISIS, left me speechless and educated. I had no idea this was happening, but Stacey brought it to our computer screens. She knew the courage of the women and, ultimately, the documentary displayed key issues that matter to us now.

The documentaries are so raw and heartbreaking that watching them constantly leaves a lasting impact on me. As the programmes finish, we know that these issues cannot be ignored. From the view of the viewer, we can see how important this is to Stacey. Her emotions are constantly noticeable and she isn’t afraid to ask the questions that need answering.

Stacey Dooley is one of the greatest documentary presenters I have ever had the pleasure of watching and I hope she continues to educate us in the issues that need talking about. Her continuing use of her privilege to speak out, her constant courage and her presenting of such issues cannot even be put into words.
